The Garden is Waking Up!

I know winter is not quite over yet, but when the first herbs start waking up I know it that spring is nearly here. This week the garden is showing the first signs of new growth for the early risers, like the nettles, offering their first tender greens for our smoothies...

the archangel (which I'll be harvesting soon)...

lovely fresh catnip...

bright green yarrow leaves...

beautiful red-tinged meadowsweet leaves...

and new growth on the lady's mantle (I'm so glad to see she's returned after her precarious first year).

Every week more and more slumbering plants will be awakening, but these are the heralds in my garden. It is so magical to see them returning, reminding me that medicine making season is just around the corner. In fact, if I want to harvest the skunk cabbage root this year, I best get out there soon. The flowers are up, signaling digging time. And so begins another year with the plant medicine...

Herbal Medicine Share!!!!!!

I'm offering something new this year...
an herbal medicine subscription program!

Just like a vegetable or fruit CSA share, an herbal medicine share brings you plant medicine as herbs are harvested (and medicines processed) throughout the season. However, instead of weekly pick-ups, my medicine shares will be available for pick up only three times through the season at our garden outside of Oxford, Pa. I am structuring it this way (and this is the first year, so we'll see how it goes) in order to accomodate folks who live out of town. Here's the details...

Pick-up dates will be on Sundays...May 27th, July 22nd, and September 23rd from 10am to 2pm. Come any time during those hours to pick up your medicine share, walk around the garden, meet the plants and chat a little.

Each pick-up will include the following...

  • 2 one ounce tins of salve or balm
  • 1 two ounce bottle of herbal oil
  • 1 two ounce (or 2 one ounce) bottle of tincture or elixir
  • dried herbal tea
  • fresh herbs for your own preparations
  • a newsletter explaining your herbal medicines and how to use them
  • and maybe extra surprise
Just like a vegetable CSA, the exact contents of your share will depend on the season and what grows well this year. I can, however, give you a glimpse of some of the plant healers I am counting on to appear in one form or another in your share...
  • Comfrey
  • St. John's Wort
  • Chickweed
  • Skullcap
  • Yarrow
  • Black Walnut
  • Plantain
  • Calendula
  • Meadowsweet
  • Catnip
  • Rosemary
  • California Poppy
  • Elder
  • Lemon Balm
  • Arnica
  • Lobelia
  • Skunk Cabbage
  • Wild Cherry
  • Echinacea
  • Valerian
  • Mullein
...and many others.

By the end of the season your herbal medicine cabinet will be stocked with lovely handcrafted, locally grown, ethically wildcrafted and chemical-free herbal products. As this is my first season, I'm only accepting 15 shares.

The cost for a share is $135 for the season, due by April 30th.
Sign up by e-mailing me at
Long distance shares will be offered at a price of $150 to cover shipping (fresh herbs will not be shipped)

I look forward to making medicine for you this season, and sharing the gifts of the healing plants.

I Need Some Chickweed...

Me: Rainer, I need some chickweed to make a poultice for papa's foot. Do you know where I can find some?

Rainer: Yeah, up on the hillside.

Me: Can you show me?

Rainer: Sure, it's up the hill, turn left at the stump, about 10 paces, then look under the leaves.

Sure enough...

Me: Thanks Rainer.

Rainer: Sure. Alden and I like to munch on them when we are out here playing.

Me: (Smile)
